We’re thrilled to announce the Girls of Paper and Fire hardback, publishing on November 6th!
You asked, and we answered. Since we released our first round of proofs at YALC, we’ve been inundated with questions about when the hardback of this stunning book would be released. Well, we finally have an answer. Originally, we were going to publish the book as an ebook in November and a paperback original in 2019, but following YALC, there has been so much love and excitement for this wonderful novel that we realised we just had to publish a hardback after all.
For those of you unfamiliar with the book, Girls of Paper and Fire is a young adult fantasy novel chock full of Asian mythology. It also mixes in aspects of Ngan’s time growing up in Malaysia and follows Lei, a young girl who is kidnapped and forced to become a Paper Girl, one of the Demon King’s concubines. Oh, and it also has a wonderful lesbian relationship.
A recent review in Publisher’s Weekly states ‘Ngan’s plot is tense and tight, her action sequences are elegant and adrenaline-soaked, and her story’s stakes increase exponentially through the pulse-pounding conclusion. She champions self-empowerment while condemning classism, homophobia, and the commodification of women. What most distinguishes this book, though, is how incisively and intoxicatingly Ngan writes about love’.
And if that’s not enough to tempt you, just look at it:
Memoirs of a Geisha meets The Selection in this stunning YA fantasy novel. Perfect for fans of Renee Ahdieh, Laini Taylor and Sabaa Tahir.
Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. It’s the highest honour they could hope for…and the most demeaning. This year, there’s a ninth. And instead of paper, she’s made of fire.
Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara. Ten years ago, her mother was snatched by the royal guards, and her fate remains unknown. Now, the guards are back and this time it’s Lei they’re after – the girl with the golden eyes, whose rumoured beauty has piqued the king’s interest.
Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit a king’s consort. There, Lei does the unthinkable – she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world’s entire way of life. Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she’s willing to go for justice and revenge.
TW: violence and sexual abuse.
