Get to know the Hodderscape Team!

final dodo

Hello, hello! As you may or may not be aware, there have been a few changes to the Hodderscape team lately. Sadly, a few people have moved on to other jobs, (we miss you guys!), but we are so lucky to have found new, just-as-awesome people to replace them. Hodderscape is also growing, so we’ve been lucky enough to have more people join the team.

BUT, it always takes a little while to get to know new people, so I thought I would kick-start the process with a quick nerdy survey. After all, as part of my interview for the job, Oliver subjected me to an SFF quiz.

On the Hodderscape team questionnaire, I learned many things. Some were good (many of us agree that a lightsabre is the perfect zombie apocalypse weapon) and others were bad (I am extremely outnumbered in the opinion that Harry and Hermoine would’ve been the perfect couple), but one thing is for sure – we’ll have material to debate for years to come.

Enjoy reading our answers, and feel free to chime in with opinions of your own!

I need a new nerdy photo really bad – this one is 5 years old!

What’s your favourite book of all time? The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? Since apparently EVERYONE ELSE wants to be able to teleport, which now doesn’t seem special, I’m going to go with telekinesis – it provides just as many ways to be lazy, and is almost as wayyyyy cooler.

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? God, I wrote these questions and I’ve just realised I’m evil. This is SUCH a hard one. I want to say the world of the Stormlight Archives, but actually, that would suck, since there are storms, angry gods and god knows whatever else constantly trying to wipe humanity off the face of the earth. (Really, I just want to be Jasnah). I would also say the world of Nevernight, but then the constant light would be awful, and I’d probably be assassinated. (Really, I just want to be Mia Corvere). Actually, what on earth am I talking about? – the world of the Wayfarers wins hands down (as long as I can join the crew of course)

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? There is NO SUCH THING as a guilty pleasure! (although I do watch a lot of terrible US SFF tv shows)

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? Apparently, I am outnumbered on this issue…

Who is your favourite Doctor? David Tennant all the way. I don’t have a shrine, but it’s a close run thing.

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? A lightsabre – no chance of running out of fuel and you can still stand a fair distance away (but I am pretty clumsy, so maybe I’ll make it an extra-long one).

Is Pluto a planet? Many Very Monkeys Jumped Straight Up Nasty doesn’t make any sense without the Plants. (Yes, I am aware how nonsensical that sentence is, but damn it, I don’t care.)

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? I’m rewatching season 1 of Westworld right now and I had forgotten how utterly fantastic it is.

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? At my first ever convention, way back before I worked in publishing, I went all out and dressed up. Not THAT nerdy, but unfortunately this was quite a serious industry convention and I was the only one there dressed up, so it felt intensly so.

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? No, NO. I refuse to choose. (Star Trek)

Angel or Spike? Spike, all the way.

PC or Mac? Mac. I may be a little obsessed with Apple products!

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans? Prattsworth…

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Can I choose to BE Jessica Jones, but also be dating Daredevil?

BOOK OR MOVIE?

Lord of the Rings: Both!

Harry Potter: Books

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Books

Twilight: Books

The Princess Bride: Both

What’s your favourite book of all time? The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. This is a brilliant adventure following an awesome kickass heroine called Thursday Next, who is a Literary Detective and can travel into books and interact with the characters. She has a pet dodo called Pickwick, a time-travelling father, plus a menacing adversary with formidable powers including shape-shifting and hypnosis – what more do you want!? It’s such a unique and clever series with heaps of mind-boggling moments!

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? I love the idea of being able to teleport, mainly because I wouldn’t have to spend any time travelling or commuting. Plus on your lunch break, instead of eating in the canteen, you could teleport to say a banquet on an exotic beach and read in a hammock!

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? Definitely Becky Chamber’s universe – I would love to be able to travel around with the Wayfarer crew or explore different planets and haggle at the space markets.

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? I was a massive ‘Gleek’ at uni (I even joined the Glee society) and I am obsessed with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend where they just randomly break out into song and dance. I would love to live in a musical.

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? No, I don’t mind Hermione and Ron being together, however, I’m not sure Harry should have ended up with Ginny. I just didn’t feel that their romance built enough in the books and it seemed odd to me!

Who is your favourite doctor? Matt Smith – the fish fingers and custard episode is my favourite. David Tennant is also fantastic though and a very close second in my opinion.

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? Can I take a person? If so I’d have Kilgrave from Jessica Jones so he could tell the zombies that they do not, in fact, want to eat human brains and instead they will all be vegetarians! However, I would then also need Jessica Jones to protect me from Kilgrave because I’m very scared of him.

Is Pluto a planet? In my world, it’s been declassified but it may still be a planet in other parallel universes – who knows, maybe in one world, it’s where humans are currently living and Earth has been reduced to a star!

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? I’ve just finished Sabrina on Netflix which was fantastic, but it also made me jump (a lot!) so I had to watch old Sabrina episodes in between to calm my nerves. I’ve also just finished Westworld series 2 and Reverie which I loved.

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? I once dressed up as the Hogwarts Express with my sisters for the launch of the Cursed Child at Foyles and was featured on Buzzfeed. My sister designed the whole thing and it was even flatpack for easy transport.

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? Oh tough but I’d have to say I’m a Trekkie through and through mainly because of fond memories watching the Jean-Luc Picard episodes with my Dad.

Angel or Spike? Angel (I always go for the good guys, mainly because they will treat you properly and cause a whole lot less aggravation in the relationship)

PC or Mac? Mac!

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans? Ooo Chris Pratt, I love the Guardians of the Galaxy and he seems super lovely in real life too (watch his appearances on Graeme Norton – he’s hilarious!)

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Jessica Jones – she is super awesome and David Tennant as Kilgrave is one of my all-time favourite villains.

BOOK OR MOVIE?

Lord of the Rings:  This is probably an unpopular choice but I think I prefer the movies, mainly for the eye candy of Aragorn?

Harry Potter: The books! I love the movies too but my childhood was made reading the books.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Definitely the books! They need to make a better movie – sorry!

Twilight: The books, the first movie was fine but the others made me cringe.

The Princess Bride: Ah book all the way! The film is great, albeit out-dated, and in my head, the whole thing just seemed much cooler!

What’s your favourite book of all time? That’s a hard question!!! Hmm, I’d probably have to say Pride and Prejudice (because whatever anyone says, Jane Austen is EPIC and hilarious and amazing) or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (definitely my favourite of all the Harry Potter books as so much intrigue, angst and fantastic magic whilst all still at Hogwarts. Plus I love a cliff-hanger).

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? I would have to say flying! I’ve always wanted to fly, and always have dreams about flying!

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? Another difficult question… I would probably have to say Neverland – as I can fly (essential!), and never grow up! – and have fun swash-buckling with pirates. Plus, let’s be real, we all had a crush on Jeremy Sumpter as Peter Pan in the real people movie!

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? Listening to Harry Potter on audible on repeat (probably have listened to all the books on repeat at least 4x this past year).

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? No, definitely not! I think Hermione and Ron, and Harry and Ginny actually, are all pretty perfect together in their respective pairs. Though I think the romance could have all been built up a bit more!

Who is your favourite doctor? Dr Seuss? – sorry, I sadly am not a follower of Doctor Who! (don’t shoot me!)

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? Can I say a legion of robots that would hopefully protect me from all zombies? I feel like a robot army would be a good weapon against a zombie apocalypse – plus I’d gain some robot friends!

Is Pluto a planet? In my heart of hearts, it always will be. (Who wants the last planet to be Uranus, seriously?)

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? The Originals – way better than the Vampire Diaries in my opinion!

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? Dressed up as Luna Lovegood, with homemade spectrespecs and Gryffindor hat, for the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince premiere.

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars

Angel or Spike? Neither – my heart has been stolen by Niklaus Michaelson

PC or Mac? Mac

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans? Chris Hemsworth

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Sorry, I need to catch up!

BOOK OR MOVIE?

Lord of the Rings: I think book, but I love the movies too!

Harry Potter: 100% book, but I do LOVE the movies too

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: I haven’t actually seen or read either!

Twilight: I’d have to say book, but really only the first one – the rest of the series was a constant let down. Again, cue promotion of The Vampire Diaries or the Originals – SO MUCH BETTER. Or even Vampire Academy – seriously there are 21850918514184901 vampire books out there that are better than Twilight!

The Princess Bride: I haven’t actually seen or read either!

What’s your favourite book of all time? Jane Eyre. Not really SFF, but it is dark and gothic.

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? Teleportation – screw you, commute!

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? Just to be obvious, Harry Potter.

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? Going to see Avengers films on my own at the cinema.

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? Absolutely not, Ginny was perfect – well, book-Ginny was, anyway. The real question is: should Hermione have ended up with Ron?

Who is your favourite doctor? Again, just to be totes obvs, David Tennant.

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? Flamethrower.

Is Pluto a planet? Yes – otherwise my mnemonic doesn’t work!

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? Doctor Strange.

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? Erm. Gone to see Cursed Child dressed up in full Harry Potter gear, complete with glasses and wand.

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars

Angel or Spike? Angel

PC or Mac? PC!!!!!!

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans? Ooooooh tricky. I’d have to say Pratt.

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Jessica Jones

BOOK OR MOVIE?

Lord of the Rings: Book

Harry Potter: Book

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Book

Twilight: Book

The Princess Bride: Book

Always book…

What’s your favourite book of all time? Hard to say… But if I had to pick I would say Panty by Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay or A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, not very SFF I know…

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? Super strength to fight crime against women ✊

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? Would love to live in Tokyo in an Aggretsuko reality and smash the patriarchy one karaoke session at a time.

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, if you enjoy it you shouldn’t feel guilty ☺️ but people normally stop taking me seriously when I say I love iZombie and Santa Clarita Diet. Anything with zombies really… I also love Under the Dome which most King fans hated.

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? Nope

Who is your favourite doctor? 🤦‍♀️ I’ve never watched the Doctor apart from the David Tennant one… Sorry!

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? I honestly believe I would be the first to die, but I think I would choose a gun with a silencer as not to be made with the loud bang, and I couldn’t rock a Michonne using a Katana cause I would be terrified to get too close to the walkers…

Is Pluto a planet? ABSOLUTELY! 100% YES! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! Sorry, Neil deGrasse Tyson…

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? Does The Big Bang Theory count, cause I watch it every day? 😂 also Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? From the age of 16, I would wait in line every Thursday from 7am in front of a Newspaper headquarters to get free tickets to film premieres. I stopped at the age of 19 when I got a job at a cinema 😊

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Trek

Angel or Spike? This is sooooo hard! If we were talking about True Blood I would say Eric over Bill any day… But between Angel and Spike I have to agree with Joss Whedon “Actually, I’m a Spike/Angel shipper”, hahaha maybe I have to re-watch the series to re-evaluate my decision… it’s been too long.

PC or Mac? Mac

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans? Hemsworth

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Ha! Not as easy as that… Jessica Jones (season one), Luke Cage EVERYTHING but I must admit I loved Iron Fist  Season Two (I know… super controversial…).

But how cool was the result of the final episode? #teamColleen

Plus it was great to see the wonderful collaboration between Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, and it irritated me that the show got cancelled now that they were so close to getting the spotlight themselves! I’m just hoping the rumours for a Daughters of the Dragon series do comes to fruition.

BOOK OR MOVIE?

Lord of the Rings: Movie

Harry Potter: Books

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Books

Twilight: Kind of liked the books never watched the movies…

The Princess Bride: movie

What’s your favourite book of all time? Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? Shapeshifting like Tonks. I would then grant myself extraordinary good looks and use them to coax someone into giving me the ability to teleport also.

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse.

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? Some would say being a Trekkie is a guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel a bit guilty!

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? NO. I realise this is unpopular, but I like Hermione and Ron. I didn’t really get Harry and Ginny though. Harry and Luna on the other hand…

Who is your favourite Doctor? David Tennant, though I’m loving Jodie so far too.

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? A lightsaber.

Is Pluto a planet? A dwarf planet is still a planet.

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? Doctor Who!

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? Flew to London (I was living in Ireland at the time) and dressed up as Jareth from Labyrinth to attend an interactive screening of the film. It was MAGICAL.

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? You cannot make me choose.

Angel or Spike? Spike.

PC or Mac? PC.

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans? Hemsworth, please and thank you.

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Jessica Jones.

Harry Potter: Books!

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Confession: I have not read or seen this. But I do love the song the dolphins sing.

Twilight: Neither, sorry Twilight fans.

The Princess Bride: Movie. It gives me all the fuzzy feelings.

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? The Little Mermaid’s universe so I can fulfil my underwater potential.

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure? N/A

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? DUH! Power couple right there.

Who is your favourite doctor? N/A

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse? Wolverine-esque talons so I can slice their heads off in one swift swoosh.

Is Pluto a planet? Is this a trick question? Poor Pluto getting etched out like that.

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? Does Sabrina count? I still hope that each milestone birthday brings me my witchy powers. Nothing as yet.

Oliver Johnson
Job: Publisher

Oliver JohnsonWhat’s your favourite book of all time? A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M Miller

If you could have any superpower or magical ability, what would be? Well, the last superhero (or villain) I CHOSE to be was Dr Don Megalo, aka Sharkman, in an RPG. Not a nice man to meet when out for a paddle, believe me.

If you could live in any fictional universe, which one would it be? I guess I like the Shire bits of Lord of the Rings. Hobbit holes and parties…. But obviously not all the rest of it.

What’s your biggest geeky guilty pleasure?  No guilt involved: I am an avid RPGer

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry? I have no idea as I only read the first two books and hadn’t formed an opinion when I stopped the series.

Who is your favourite doctor?  Well, I’m old enough to have seen Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee live, but Tom Baker has in the years since become, to me, the epitome of the role…

What would be your weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse?  I always had a lot of respect for Michonne’s samurai sword.

Is Pluto a planet? It used to be.

What was the last geeky movie or TV show you watched? The third series of Netflix Daredevil, RIP.

What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? Probably live demonstrate with my co-creator Dave Morris the Dragon Warriors RPG to sceptical booksellers back in the 80s.

THIS OR THAT?

Star Wars or Star Trek? This is like SF chalk and cheese. Impossible to answer: I love them both.

Angel or Spike? This reveals my Hodderscape Achilles heel: a profound lack of knowledge about Buffy. So, no opinion.

PC or Mac? PC.

Chris Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans?  Who came up with these questions anyway? Hmm, this one I think comes down to who makes me laugh most, so it’s close between Pratt and Hemsworth. In the end, I think Thor just edges it.

Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist? Daredevil, obvs.

BOOK OR MOVIE?

Lord of the Rings: Book

Harry Potter: Movie

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Book

Twilight: Movie

The Princess Bride: Oh, COME ON, how could you decide? Alright, Movie then….
