Today, we are thrilled to reveal the cover for a fabulous new addition to the Hodderscape family (and your TBRs!) – Emily Eternal by M. G. Wheaton.
Emily Eternal was acquired last year and I knew I had something special on my hands from the very first page. Emily is an artificial consciousness, who was originally designed to help humans process trauma. Unfortunately, before her team can win any Nobel Prizes for her creation, humanity realises that the sun is dying, and we only have 6 months before our total extinction.
One of my favourite things about the book is the themes of hope and optimism running through it. As a creation of humanity, Emily is destined to share our fate, but she refuses to give up, and is determined to find a solution that will allow us to retain the qualities that make us most human. Her voice is warm and genuine, her humour is quiet and she has a brilliant humanness, which is not at all diminished by the fact that she isn’t one. We’re currently working on some *very special* proofs and I can’t wait to share them with you so you can fall in love with Emily, just like I did.
This stunning cover was designed in-house, by our very own Natalie Chen. I was absolutely delighted when I first saw it – Natalie effortlessly captured everything I wanted the cover to say, and brought it all together beautifully. If you’d like to see more, you can follow @HodderArt on Twitter for behinds the scenes goings on from our Art Department.
Meet Emily – she can solve advanced mathematical problems, unlock the mind’s deepest secrets and even fix your truck’s air con, but unfortunately, she can’t restart the Sun.
She’s an artificial consciousness, designed in a lab to help humans process trauma, which is particularly helpful when the sun begins to die 5 billion years before scientists agreed it was supposed to.
So, her beloved human race is screwed, and so is Emily. That is, until she finds a potential answer buried deep in the human genome. But before her solution can be tested, her lab is brutally attacked, and Emily is forced to go on the run with two human companions – college student Jason and small-town Sheriff, Mayra.
As the sun’s death draws near, Emily and her friends must race against time to save humanity. But before long it becomes clear that it’s not only the species at stake, but also that which makes us most human.
Emily Eternal will be released on April 9th 2019. We’ll be releasing more information as publication gets closer – keep your eyes peeled!
