It’s that time of year… the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and book deals are in the air! Today, please help us welcome the newest member of the Hodder family, Matthew Blakstad!
We’re thrilled to start off London Book Fair week with some exciting news: we’ve acquired two books by debut author Matthew Blakstad. The deal was negotiated by Cathryn M. Summerhayes at William Morris Entertainment.
In the new digital world, information is a right… privacy isn’t. A seemingly innocent spam email is sent to millions of people – a normal, everyday occurrence in our digital age. The only problem: the recipients are all early subscribers of a governmental digital ID program that promises its users complete privacy and security. As MP Bethany Lehrer races against the clock to find the hacker who sent the spam before the program is completely shut down, computer programmer Danielle Farr finds herself embroiled in the chase. Because the hacker who sent the email isn’t a real person – it’s a sock puppet, a fake internet identity that someone is trying to use to bring down the government itself…
Matthew’s first career was as a professional child actor. From the age of ten, he had roles in TV dramas, in film and on stage at theatres including the Royal Court. After graduating from Oxford with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, he began a career in online communications, consulting for a wide range of clients from the BBC to major banks. Since 2008, he has been in public service, using his communication skills to help the British population understand and manage their money. In 2012 Matthew took the Writing a Novel course at Faber Academy. Sockpuppet is his first novel.
Cathryn Summerhayes says: ‘Sockpuppet is a unique and thrilling novel that will make you question everything about the way you currently live your life on-line. Matthew is such an exciting and creative new writer and pairing him with Anne Perry and the amazingly inventive team at Hodder is a perfect fit.’
Anne Perry says: ‘In the wake of last year’s Sony email hack, Sockpuppet isn’t just a thrilling read. It’s a blistering look at the concepts of individuality and privacy in the digital world – and terrifyingly relevant to our lives today. Matthew Blakstad is a brilliant new voice and we couldn’t be prouder to be publishing him.’
Sockpuppet will publish in 2016.
Please help us welcome Matthew to Team Hodderscape!
