The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is the jubilant debut novel from Becky Chambers, set on board a patched-up old spaceship called The Wayfarer. Welcome to your new obsession. Here are 10 reasons why you’re going to love it.

1.       Because it will make you happy. We promise.

2.       Because it’s all about diversity without shouting about it.

3.       Because you will fall in love with each and every character. Guaranteed.

4.       Because it’s about everyday heroes, not just the ones with the superpowers and the big guns.

5.       Because it’ll make you want to swap your Earth-bound existence for life on board a patched-up old spaceship.

6.       Because it’ll make you feel like you’re hanging out on the bridge of the Millennium Falcon.

7.       Because it’s so very, very human – despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that the characters span multiple species.

8.       Because you can travel across the galaxies from the comfort of your reading nook (we recommend pillow forts).

giphy

9.       Because it features not one but several kick-ass female heroines.

10.   Because Becky Chambers is a bright shining new talent and soon it’s going to be very uncool not to have discovered her.

Bonus Reason. You shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. But in this case… Look how amazing it is.

    Highly, highly, highly recommended!!
I have had the pleasure to read the book in March 2015.

    I’m was deeply impressed.
How can it be that a science fiction story with such a minimum of action is that entertaining.
    Excellent story and great characters.
I love the mix of different alien life forms and it is good that humans do not dominate.

Just read the final page, and yes, I am obsessed. Looked for Hodder straight away so I could comment somewhere. Becky Chambers with her debut novel goes straight to the top five of my most favourite sci fi authors, all women. Can’t wait for her next novel. Wow! Thank you Becky Chambers. Astrophysics and equity/social justice perfectly combined.
